“There isn’t a regular Turning the Tide customer. We get an incredibly diverse, cross section of people here. We have parents with little kids to elders that come in. We have folks from every walk of life and background. And that’s what I’m most proud of in terms of this place.”
Meet Peter Garden. Peter is the owner of Turning the Tide, one of Saskatoon’s most notable independent bookstore. Many of you may associate Turning the Tide with the Little Red House located behind the former Farnam Block. With news of an eviction occurring in January 2015, Peter took the opportunity to organized community consultations regarding the future of Turning the Tide and what its new role in the community could look like. Emerging from these sessions was Treaty 6 Justice Collective, a non-profit organization with a focus on social, environmental, and economic justice. With a new mandate and more space, Turning the Tide reopened in conjunction with The Stand – Community Organizing Centre, in its new location at 615 Main Street. Based on a social enterprise model, Turning the Tide’s new space houses not only the bookstore, but also provides meeting, event, and co-working space for community organizations who don’t possess the means to rent office space. Make sure to check out Turning the Tides and The Stand’s Facebook pages for upcoming events and workshops and further information on how to book Broadway’s first community organizing space.
