On Saturday, August 15, approximately 40 residents, neighbours, volunteers and visitors gathered at Grace-Westminster United Church for the first Broadway Community Table.
We welcomed people across generations and life stages – including community members in their 90s, pregnant community members, families, volunteers and people who simply wanted an opportunity to share a meal and connect.
Created around the idea that food brings people together, the Broadway Community Table combines hands-on learning, a shared community meal, activities, resource sharing and opportunities for neighbours to build relationships in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
Our first gathering showed us that the impact of one table can reach much farther than the room it sits in.
Preparing and Sharing Food
Food was at the heart of the first Broadway Community Table.
Ingredients for the meal were provided by Steep Hill Food Co-op, helping make it possible to offer a free community meal to everyone who joined us.
The menu included Mulligatawny Soup, Vegetarian Chilli, and Chickpea Hermit Cookies, creating an opportunity to share good food while bringing neighbours together around the same table.
While we weren’t able to offer the planned cooking class at this first gathering, it remains part of the Community Table program and will be offered at an upcoming event.
Pull Up a Chair
Later in the afternoon, the Community Table opened to everyone.
Approximately 40 people joined us throughout the gathering for a free community meal, refreshments, games, activities and conversation.
A Take What You Need table offered another opportunity for community resource sharing, while contributions from Broadway businesses and community partners provided food, beverages, flowers, care items and other support.
There was no single way to participate.
Some people helped with cooking. Others arrived for the meal. Some came with family or friends, while others came on their own.
The goal was to create a space where people could walk through the door and know there was a place for them regardless of age, income, background or life experience, one of the central goals established for the Community Table.
Five New Connections for Broadway
Through the first Community Table, Broadway BID made five new community connections.
Those connections create opportunities for future partnerships, resource sharing, referrals, programming and collaboration that can help strengthen the Broadway District community long after a single event is over.
Strong communities are built through relationships.
When businesses know community organizations, organizations know their neighbours, volunteers find new opportunities to participate, and people begin recognizing familiar faces, the network supporting a neighbourhood becomes stronger.
That relationship-building is as important to the Broadway Community Table as the meal itself.
It Took a Community to Build the Table
The Broadway Community Table began with a conversation and grew because people and organizations were willing to contribute different ideas, skills and resources.

Now we’re getting ready to do it again.
The next Broadway Community Table takes place Saturday, September 26 at Grace-Westminster United Church, and there are two ways to take part.
Join the Cooking Class
Register in advance for our hands-on cooking class and spend the afternoon learning, cooking and connecting.
The food prepared together will help form part of the meal shared later at the Community Table.
