A business improvement district is a defined commercial area where local businesses and property owners work collectively to support the district.
The Broadway BID was established in 1986 and works to strengthen Broadway as a place for community, culture and commerce.
Events and Community Programming
The Broadway BID plans, leads or supports activities such as:
- Broadway Spring Fling
- Broadway Street Fair
- Ghouls & Goodies on Broadway
- Spirit of Christmas on Broadway
- Broadway Community Table
- Community Patio programming (May – October)
- Little Stone Stage programming (outside of the school year)
- Public performances
- Seasonal campaigns
- Business and community activations
These activities help people gather, discover local businesses and experience Broadway.
District Marketing
The BBID promotes Broadway through:
- The Broadway website
- Social media
- Newsletters
- Business features
- Event promotion
- Seasonal campaigns

The BBID promotes the district collectively. Individual businesses remain responsible for their own advertising, products, services and customer communications.
Business Support
The BBID communicates with member businesses and property owners about:

- City programs
- District updates
- Construction or operational information
- Marketing campaigns
- Training and resources
- Community concerns
- Partnerships
The BBID may help businesses find information or navigate a concern, but it does not manage individual businesses.
Beautification and Placemaking
The BBID may support or manage initiatives such as:
- Seasonal decorations
- Banners
- Public art
- Community gathering spaces
- Streetscape enhancements
- Event signage
- Small-scale public-space improvements
- District clean-up initiatives
Responsibility depends on the specific item, property and location.
Advocacy
The BBID may advocate on district-wide matters involving:

- City policies affecting the district
Advocacy is based on the collective interests of the district. The BBID is non-partisan and does not endorse political candidates or parties.

What the City of Saskatoon Handles
The City is generally responsible for:

- Parking enforcement

- Municipal streetlights

- Water and sewer systems
- Snow and ice on City property
- Waste collection
- Bylaw enforcement
- Municipal construction
- Transit
- City-owned infrastructure

What Property Owners Handle
Property owners are generally responsible for:
- Private buildings
- Private parking areas
- Building maintenance
- Leases
- Private-property repairs
- Some snow and ice removal
- Exterior lighting attached to private property
- Access to privately owned spaces
Contact the property owner or property manager directly when the matter relates to a specific building.
What Individual Businesses Handle
Individual businesses are responsible for:
- Products and services
- Customer service
- Employment
- Business hours
- Reservations
- Refunds
- Accessibility within their own premises
- Private events
- Lost property left at their location
- Business-specific complaints

The Broadway BID does not investigate or decide individual customer-service disputes.
What the Nutana Community Association Handles
Nutana Community Association may provide:
- Recreation programs
- Neighbourhood events
- Resident-led initiatives
- Community newsletters
- Membership activities
- Local advocacy
- Volunteer opportunities
The Broadway BID may partner with community associations, but the organizations have different mandates and service areas.
What Emergency and Community Services Handle
For an immediate emergency, call 911.
Police, fire, paramedics, health services and crisis organizations are responsible for emergency and specialized responses.
The BBID does not provide:
- Emergency medical care
- Law enforcement
- Crisis counselling
- Clinical mental-health services
- Housing placement
- Social-work case management
What the BBID Cannot Guarantee
The BBID cannot guarantee:
- That every submitted event will be promoted
- That every performer will receive a booking
- That all businesses will participate in every campaign
- That every community idea can be funded
- That concerns outside its authority will be resolved
- That public events will proceed during unsafe weather conditions
- That all private businesses or buildings have the same accessibility features
